- PureGym Norwich Castle Mall, from £16.99 plus £9.99 to join. In the Castle Quarter, open 24 hours, 400 metres from the market.
- PureGym Norwich Riverside, from £16.99 plus £10. On Wherry Road in the Riverside strip, beside the Odeon.
- The Gym Group Norwich City, £17.99 off peak plus £10, on Little London Street. Standard and ultimate tiers are £23.99.
- PureGym Norwich Aylsham Road, £19.99 with no joining fee, currently £13.99 for three months.
- Norman Centre Xtra Mile, £19.99 on Bignold Road, 40 plus stations, run by the council.
Four of those five are open around the clock. The fifth is the only one where a member of staff will know your name.
Pay as you go beats membership more often than you think
A £16.99 membership costs £203.88 a year whether you go or not. At the Norman Centre a visit is £4.90, or £3.60 with a Go4Less card, so eight visits a month costs less than most chain memberships and four visits costs less than half. Sportspark publishes Bronze at £5.25 and Green at £2.50 a month, plus the £12.50 admin fee. Phoenix Gym sells a £7.99 day pass and a £19.99 fortnight, which is the cheapest way to test a gym properly before committing. CREW Fitness on Vulcan Road South charges £15 to drop in to a class.
Be honest about attendance. The industry runs on the gap between intention and turnstile data, and January memberships are priced accordingly.
Cheap does not have to mean a budget chain
Several of the highest rated gyms in the city are small independents that never appear in a price comparison because they do not advertise. They are worth a phone call before you sign anything, because a £25 independent with 5.0 from 146 reviews is better value than a £17 box you stop attending in March.
The ones to ask: Perfit Fitness on Concorde Road, Fully Pumped on Delta Close, which opens at 5am, Body Transform Fitness next door, Mukanda Weightlifting Club on Reepham Road and Blackhearts and Barbells on Europa Way. None of them publish a monthly rate, so ask for it plainly and ask what a month costs with no contract.
Students should not buy at these prices at all. See student gyms, where a year at Sportspark costs £320 and The Gym Group starts at £139 for nine months.
