Four price bands, and where the value sits
The budget chains cluster tightly between £16.99 and £23.99. PureGym Castle Mall and PureGym Riverside both open at £16.99 a month, with a joining fee of £9.99 and £10 respectively. PureGym Aylsham Road lists £19.99 with no joining fee, running a £13.99 offer for three months. The Gym Group Norwich City is £17.99 off peak or £23.99 for the standard and ultimate tiers, each plus £10 to join.
The council undercuts all of them if you train twice a week and no more. The Norman Centre on Bignold Road charges £19.99 a month for the Xtra Mile gym, £4.90 a visit pay as you go, £3.60 with a Go4Less card and £6.50 to come and try. Classes run mostly £2.50 to £8 and are free to monthly members. Those prices took effect on 18 May 2026.
The strongest independent charges roughly double the cheapest chain. Phoenix Gym is £29.99 a month or £249.99 for the year, £34.99 premium or £299.99, with a £7.99 day pass and a £19.99 fortnight. Sportspark at UEA sits at the top of the published range: Gold £42, Silver £33.50, Bronze £5.25, Green £2.50, all plus a £12.50 admin fee.
What the premium clubs will not tell you
David Lloyd, Bannatyne, Nuffield Health, NRG Gym and You Fit publish no membership price in public. That is a deliberate sales design, not an oversight. It routes you to a phone call or a tour, where the price becomes a negotiation and the joining fee becomes a concession they can hand back to close you.
Treat it as useful information. Walk in with the published market in your head: £16.99 to £23.99 for a budget box with 24 hour access, around £30 for the best independent in the city, £42 for a fifty metre pool and an athletics track. Ask for the monthly rate, the minimum term, the joining fee and the notice period in one go, in writing, before you sit down.
The first month is never the headline price
Three costs sit behind the advertised figure, and they are where budget memberships stop being budget.
- Joining fees. £9.99 at PureGym Castle Mall, £10 at PureGym Riverside and at both Gym Group tiers, nothing at PureGym Aylsham Road, £12.50 admin at Sportspark.
- Term length. The cheapest annual rates, Phoenix at £249.99 and Sportspark student Gold at £320, are paid up front. The monthly equivalents cost more over a year.
- Peak restrictions. Off peak at £17.99 is only a saving if your training window genuinely sits outside the busy hours.

Students and shift workers price differently
Two groups can beat the open market outright. UEA students pay £320 a year for Sportspark Gold, which now includes peak time group exercise for the first time, and Silver at £230 a year or £50 up front plus £24.50 a month. Any full time student aged 16 or over can buy an Educational Sportscard for £13.50 a year. The Gym Group offers students from £139 for nine or twelve months with no joining fee, and Phoenix charges students and corporate members £24.99 standard or £29.99 premium.
