There are a dozen gyms in Norwich city centre within a mile of the market, and the best of them is a strength room on Bank Plain that closes on Fridays.
Within ten minutes of the market
The city centre is genuinely walkable, so distance from the market is the only geography that matters here.
Perun Strength, 17 Bank Plain, 100 metres out. 5.0 from 79 reviews, closed Fridays, open weekend mornings.
The Gym Group Norwich City, 6 to 8 Little London Street, 300 metres. 24 hours, from £17.99.
Nuffield Health, Barrack Street, 800 metres. 4.5 from 409, price not published.
Wensum Sports Centre, 169a King Street, 900 metres.
Complete Fitness, Heigham Street, 1.1km. 24 hours, 4.9 from 59.
The two shopping centres and the riverside
Castle Mall was renamed the Castle Quarter in mid 2019 and holds one of the three PureGyms. Chapelfield became Chantry Place in October 2020, though nobody born here says so. Riverside, the post industrial strip along Wherry Road, carries the Odeon, the Riverside Leisure Centre and the second PureGym.
North of the river, Anglia Square is being rebuilt in a £350m scheme by Aviva Capital Partners with Norwich City Council and a £34m Homes England grant, with up to 1,100 homes plus 8,000 square metres of retail, office and leisure space, and construction required to commence by July 2026. If you live in NR3, the gym map here will look different in a few years.
City centre trade offs
The centre gives you two chain boxes open round the clock at budget prices, one strong independent at £29.99, and a tight little strength room by the castle. What it does not give you is space. Nobody in NR1 is fitting a fifty metre pool or an eight lane sprint track, so if that is what you want, look at Sportspark in NR4.
Parking is the other cost. Everything listed here is a walk or a bus ride from the city core, which is an advantage if you live in the Golden Triangle or study at Norwich University of the Arts, whose twelve buildings all sit in the centre, and a nuisance if you are driving in from Sprowston.
Every gym in the city centre
Within walking or a short drive of the centre. Areas overlap, so a gym can appear on more than one area page.
Perun Strength on Bank Plain, roughly 100 metres away, followed by The Gym Group on Little London Street at 300 metres and PureGym in the Castle Quarter at 400 metres.
