A weightlifting gym Norwich shortlist is not the chains. It is a handful of independents, one of them a hundred metres from the castle and one a weightlifting club on Reepham Road.
The strength rooms
Perun Strength, 17 Bank Plain NR2. 5.0 from 79 reviews and the most central serious room in the city. Open 7.30am to 7.30pm most weekdays, weekend mornings, closed Fridays.
Norwich Strength Training, Trident Drive off Britannia Road NR1. 5.0 from 13 reviews, just over a kilometre from the centre.
Mukanda Weightlifting Club, Unit 2, 313A Reepham Road NR6. A weightlifting club proper, 5.0 from 12, open in two blocks a day, mornings then 3pm onwards, closed Sundays.
Blackhearts and Barbells, Unit 6 Europa Way NR1. 5.0 from 7, an early opener.
Ironside Gym, Sapphire House, Roundtree Way NR7. 5.0 from 43, listed with chiropractic, sports injury and massage services alongside the gym.
Physique Fit, Unit 2 Roundtree Close NR7. 5.0 from 74 and open 24 hours, the strongest combination of rating and access here.
The Iron Culture, 313 Aylsham Road NR3, and Grindstone Gym, 14 Whiffler Road NR3, both new enough to carry almost no reviews.
Where the big weights actually are
Three postcodes carry the city's lifting. NR7 8SX and the streets around it, Roundtree Close and Roundtree Way, hold Physique Fit, Tibbs Fitness, Ironside and BOX30 within a few hundred metres. NR6 along Vulcan Road, Delta Close and Concorde Road holds Perfit Fitness at 5.0 from 146, Body Transform Fitness at 4.8 from 98, Fully Pumped at 4.7 from 92 and CREW Fitness. NR3 along Whiffler Road and Aylsham Road holds Grindstone, The Iron Culture, EmpowHER and the PureGym on Copenhagen Way.
RS3FIT in Bowthorpe and Rebourn Performance out at Lodge Farm Barns are the outliers worth the drive, Rebourn being a performance gym that opened recently on the city outskirts.
Chain gyms and heavy lifting
The budget chains list weightlifting areas and three of them open 24 hours, which matters if you train at 6am or after a late shift. What you are buying at £16.99 to £23.99 is equipment and access, not coaching, and at peak hours you will queue for a rack. The independents above cost more and give you a room where somebody knows your programme.
If you want that coaching built into the session rather than bought separately, look at CrossFit and HYROX. If access hours are the deciding factor, see 24 hour gyms.
Perun Strength on Bank Plain for central access at 5.0 from 79 reviews, Physique Fit on Roundtree Close for 24 hour access at 5.0 from 74, and Mukanda Weightlifting Club for the club setting.
Is there a weightlifting club in Norwich?
